Guide to Applying to Burlesque Festivals

Applying to burlesque festivals can feel a little intimidating, but honestly, it mostly comes down to being prepared and doing your homework. Here's a practical walkthrough to help you put your best foot (and rhinestone) forward.

First, Get to Know the Festival You're Eyeing

Peek at who got in last time. Before you apply anywhere, spend some time looking at past lineups. Every festival has its own personality — some love classic glamour, others are all about weird, funny, or boundary-pushing work. Getting a feel for their taste helps you figure out if it's a good match (and helps you pick the right act to submit!).

Check out the headliners. They're basically the festival's calling card — they tell you what kind of caliber and vibe you'd be stepping into. If you don't recognize a name, look them up! It's a great way to get inspired too.

Chat with performers who've been there before. This one's a gem. People who've actually attended can tell you the stuff you won't find on a website — how organized things really are, how performers are treated backstage, whether the perks lived up to the promise. Most performers are happy to share their honest experience if you just ask kindly.

Know what you're signing up for. Perks vary a ton from festival to festival — some offer a stipend, others give free admission, workshops, or a gift bag. And most charge an application fee. It's worth knowing the full picture so there are no surprises later.

Next, Pull Together Your Materials

Don't stress about having a "perfect" video. A well-lit rehearsal video or something filmed at home or in a studio is genuinely fine — lots of producers just want to see your style and movement clearly. The important thing is that it's well lit so the judges can actually see you! A dark, shaky phone clip won't do your act justice, even if the performance itself is great.

Grab some good promo photos. Nice, clear images go a long way — they're often what gets picked for press and social media, which helps the festival (and you!) shine. Try to have a couple of different, well-lit shots ready to go rather than just one.

Keep your go-to info handy. A short bio, a fun tagline, some solid photos, and your act videos — have them saved somewhere easy to grab. That way when a casting opportunity pops up, you're ready to hit send without scrambling.

Get Clear on Your "Why"

Think about what you actually want out of this festival. Are you hoping to break into a new city's scene? Meet certain performers or producers? Build up your reel? Just get to perform a piece you're proud of on a bigger stage? Having a clear goal makes it so much easier to pick the right festival, the right act, and to write an application that feels personal instead of generic (some festivals literally ask why you want to be there!).

A Few Gentle Reminders for the Application Itself

  • Give yourself plenty of time — don't leave it to the last minute, forms can be longer than expected and technical hiccups happen.

  • If there's a fee, pay it right away so your application is officially locked in.

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions if something's unclear — producers would much rather help than receive a confused submission.

  • If you can, submit a couple of different acts to show your range.

  • Fill out every detail carefully (bio, stage name, socials, tech specs) — it makes you look prepared and easy to work with.

Whether You Get In or Not

If you're accepted — go enjoy the other shows too, not just your own! Watching and connecting with other performers is honestly one of the best parts of a festival.

If it's a no this time, try not to take it too personally. Lineups shift every year based on so many factors, and a "not this time" is never the final word.
